Neal J. McKinney, Ph.D.

Transformation is the journey.
I help you find your way.

I work with institutions, organizations, and individuals to change who gets access to global learning, career development, and wellbeing that transforms lives.

Neal J. McKinney, Ph.D.

The hard part is where the growth happens.

I'm Dr. Neal J. McKinney—a global educator, researcher, and consultant based in Columbus, Ohio.

I've spent my career in higher ed spaces between aspiration and access. As a practitioner, I've advised and directed study abroad programs serving thousands of students across the world. As a scholar, I center critical theories to disrupt structures and systems in U.S. higher education that disproportionately impact historically marginalized U.S. students of color and international students. As a consultant, I've designed, facilitated, and delivered curriculum and presentations to educational professionals of all levels in educational spaces and at national conferences (ACPA, NAFSA, The Forum on Education Abroad).

What connects all of it: a belief that transformative experiences—studying abroad, landing the right career opportunity, finding your voice as a leader—shouldn't be determined by who you are or where you come from.

How I Work

I think of my consulting role like a river guide. You're going somewhere important, and the current might be uncomfortable. My job isn't to lecture from the shore—it's to be in the boat with you, helping you navigate toward more just, equitable practices with clarity, courage, and care. That means I'm not here to hand you a checklist or tell you what you want to hear. I'm here to help you ask harder questions, sit with complexity, and actually get somewhere.

How I Can Help

I work with institutions and organizations building more equitable practices, individuals navigating personal and professional transitions, and researchers seeking to disrupt unjust educational systems.

For Institutions

Your commitment to access and opportunity is real. But commitment doesn't always translate to participation, belonging, or outcomes. I partner with colleges, universities, and education organizations to examine what's actually happening—not just what you intend—and to build practices that create genuine access and belonging.

  • Workshops and training on equity in advising, outreach, and student support
  • Content development for presentations, curriculum, and strategic initiatives
  • Thought leadership and consultation on transforming institutional practices
  • Assessment and evaluation of educational programs and outcomes
  • Writing and revision support for white papers, action plans, and reports

For Individuals

Career transitions are hard. Grad school applications are stressful. Public speaking can feel terrifying. And sometimes you just need someone in your corner who's been through it. I coach individuals at all stages—students preparing competitive applications, professionals navigating what's next, and emerging leaders finding their voice.

  • Resume and cover letter development
  • Dissertation advising, mentorship, and writing
  • Graduate school, scholarship, and grant application support
  • Presentation preparation and public speaking coaching
  • Career clarity and job search strategy
  • Academic success planning

For Researchers & Writers

Good research changes how we understand and address problems. But getting from idea to publication takes more than good intentions. I support scholars and practitioners doing qualitative work that moves the field—particularly work centered on equity, student success, and global learning.

  • Qualitative research design and methodology
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Assessment and program evaluation
  • Academic and scholarly writing support
  • Research proposal development

Speaking & Writing

I speak and write about equity in global education, student success, and the systems that shape who gets access to transformative experiences.
